College Recruiting Program
My experience and expertise will provide you insight and direction to the reality of college football recruiting, skill development and success.
I have coached college for 37 years. In 2015 I returned to Ole Miss as the Special Teams Coordinator and SPECIALISTS Coach. When I arrived, we had 5 players in our position group (kickers, punters and long snappers) on scholarship and 4 walk-ons; all were underclassmen. At the conclusion of the 2016 season we were left with 2 scholarship players, our kicker and punter. I was responsible for recruiting the rest of our roster for the 2017 season which would be made-up of recruited walk-on candidates from both high schools and junior colleges. In 2018 our starting kicker, punter and long snapper were all walk-ons, playing in the S.E.C. West! Each player earned a scholarship for the 2019 season and were also recognized nationally for their specific talents.
The initial discussion must include the prospect and parent/guardian.
1. IDENTIFYING YOUR SCHOOLS
Choosing a school and playing on the football team includes many variables. We must
identify and prioritize your interests in order to find the best schools that meet your criteria.
a. Do you have a connection with the coaching staff at any school?
b. Do you know anyone that’s presently on the team or is a football alum?
c. Is there anyone on your team that is being recruited by the schools you’re interested in?
2. PRIORITY FOCUS
a. KICKING = Percent of “Make-able” Field Goals = 20 yd line (37 yd FG) percentage
b. PUNTING = Hang Time above 4.0, Distance above 40 yd., LOCATION if possible
(Get Away Time is extremely important but must consider HS long snapper)
c. KICK OFFS = Touchbacks, Hang Time, Distance, Placement
d. SNAPPERS = Speed, Accuracy, Release & Cover, Protect?
3. HIGH SCHOOL GAME VIDEO (HUDL & other)
a. ALL kicks/snaps from last year available? All Varsity kick?
b. ALL kicks/snaps separated by KICKING, PUNTS, (LONG & SHORT SNAPS)?
c. HIT CHART:
KICKS = HASH / YARD LINE / G.A.T. / RESULT (SNAP=Timing, Location, G.A.T.)
KICK OFFS = DISTANCE / HANG TIME / TOUCH BACKS
PUNTS = HANG TIME / DISTANCE / G.A.T. / LOCATION (SNAP=Timing, Location, Cover)
4. COMMUNICATING WITH THE COACHES
a. Your Head Coach making contact with College’s Head Coach
b. Your Head Coach making contact with the Recruiting Coach
c. YOU making contact with & building a relationship with the Special Teams Coordinator
d. YOU making contact with & building a relationship with the ANALYST/CONSULTANT
